soo what have I been up to recently, well Ive been getting to grips with vectors/ Illustrator in general and colouring things pixel-by-pixel while doing some icon design work for adam at http://www.creativefreedom.co.uk/ but thats all quite confidential so nothing to show I'm afriad.

got some new custom bruses and texture packs the other day that I had a little play around with:

Mario who runs http://www.yoyoskills.com/ has asked me to supply some line art for a colouring contest he's running soon so keep an eye out for that.

a good friend of mine commissioned me to do an album cover for him a while ago and its finally recorded and mastered and named etc. so at last I'm able to show it off :D

couple weeks ago I got involved with a wonderful little project/blog called 'ten paces and draw',
you send in a sketch on a certain theme, you get sent a sketch by someone else which you then take to a final coloured version;

my finalised piece:

made from a nice sketch created by paige vickers, im assuming a tribute to one of her family members.

now whenever I think of thanksgiving I immediatley hark back to the earliest interpretation i can remember seeing, one orchestrated by the rather delightful wednesday addams

went back to one of my favorite methods of working to bring a forgotten scanned in sketchbook doodle to life for this.

i do love how quickly i can mess around and experiment with shape, space and texture when doing collage in digital space, enjoy!

this is a personal piece in response to the cancelling of the US shuttle program earlier this year.

60 odd years it took between first powered flight and landing on the moon.

now 40 years after that and its hard not to see the space shuttle grounding as a gigantic step backward.

( bear in mind this is only one possible viewpoint, i am well aware of continuing plans for mars, and other non-manned explorations of our solar system)

well i guess its been a fairly hectic time in my final year so far as i havnt updated this in far too long. well what have i been up to?
last term i did a fair bit of editorial style illustrations such as this piece on antidepressants:

i really enjoy the quick working pace of this kind of thing, it forces me to come up with new ideas quickly.

i also did some pieces based on extracts from Eon by great sci-fi author Greg Bear:

i tried new ways of working with these, trying to keep away from the computer until necessary, caused some stress but made me rediscover my love of actual drawing, i think my process as it stands now is much more well-rounded because of it.

it includes many differnt diciplines including illustration, painting, photography, sculpture, textiles graffiti and print.

on top of the leaflet and business card i did a huge window display based on how the shop is also a free gallery space/ a place for artists and people to come and see each tohers work, to sit and draw, generally use a collaborative creative space.
as such i did two massive acid spray can people flinging their styles at each other.
was fun to apporach something like graffiti which is i think very set in its ways as a physical medium (paint/markers on the wall, paper stickers etc) and use my voice which has a more collage and digital base to get the same message across, i feel like ive brought something a bit new to a very established art 'movement'

also a side project one afternoon when i was getting square eyes from too much photoshop i did some little hand painted pieces and left them around norwich for people to find, if someone picked them up they were 'rewarded' with info about the shop:

stickyfingerz promotion

well heres what ive been working on for the past 3 weeks, stickyfingerz is a graffiti shop and communal art space here in norwich and the guy who runs it (tony) also does workshops for schools and youthgroups, so as part of my uni work i designed a leaflet for his workshops and a business card for him and the shop in general

had alot fo fun taking ym own photos of peelign paint etc and learning new photomanipulation techniques to make all the effects on these, really happy with them image-wise.
had a bit of trouble with the 'stickyfingerz' text, old version was hand written graffiti style, (can be seen here and here on my flickr. but it was decided a more blocky graphical but still handmade typeface woiuld be better from a design point of view, although i think i prefer the way the old one looks.
i guess i still have a ways to go in getting an intuition for what looks good textwise.

yesterday we were given a morning editorial illustration project at NUCA,
we were given the choice of a few articles from the guardian and i chose this one by writer oliver burkeman.
we had 15 minutes to come up with an inital array of ideas, then 20 minutes to refine a couple and then after that produce a final sketch, all within an hour.
i was very happy with my final sketch so went ahead and did it. its the only time i can remember going from initial idea to finished piece in a matter of hours and was really quite fun, heres the process:

penguin design award

finally sent off all my stuff to submit this cover for the penguin design award.
cover is for perfume by patrick suskind, quite a mental story about a man who only understands his world through smell and ends up killing alot of girls in his quest to own their scent.
i really enjoyed making this, stepped out of alot of comfort zones and the end result is somehing im really proud of.

two of my drawings were picked to be included in the latest edition of StoreHouse the NUCA student union magazine, the title all submissions were working under was 'Secret'.
